Food Swamps
A food swamp is a geographical area with a high-density of establishments selling high-calorie fast food and junk food, relative to healthier food options. A food swamp, when compared to a food desert, is not necessarily lacking healthy food options but rather has a high concentration of corner stores and fast-food establishments. Studies show food swamps are a strong predictor of obesity rates, more so than food deserts. The problem of food swamps is present in low-income and racial-ethnic minority neighborhoods across the country, highlighting the extent of nutritional inequality in America
