Students analyze photos of families and their meals from different countries to explore how agriculture impacts food availability globally. The lesson also examines food access variables like transportation, fertile land, technology, religion, and perishability. The discussion emphasizes the importance of advocacy for ensuring access to nourishing and culturally relevant food for everyone.

Lesson 5: Agricultural Careers

Students engage in a simulation game to explore economic variables that determine profits in agriculture. Then, they research and evaluate agriculture and natural resource careers related to science, engineering, and business. They will choose one of the careers and write a reflective piece about its requirements, future outlook, and impact.

Lesson 2: Organic vs. Conventional – How Do We Grow Our Food?

Students analyze conventionally grown and organically grown food to make an argument about which form of agriculture is best. First, they conduct a taste test with produce. Then, they read and discuss articles comparing the two methods. Finally, students develop their argument, cite evidence and explain how this evidence supports their claim.

Lesson 1: Raising Food

Students will deconstruct a ham and cheese sandwich, trace the ingredients back to the sources and determine the environmental factors and resources needed to grow/raise each ingredient. Students will then determine if their school environment could realistically support raising/growing these ingredients, building a foundational understanding of their advocacy project.
