Lesson 1: Raising Food

Students will deconstruct a ham and cheese sandwich, trace the ingredients back to the sources and determine the environmental factors and resources needed to grow/raise each ingredient. Students will then determine if their school environment could realistically support raising/growing these ingredients, building a foundational understanding of their advocacy project.

Understanding Food Advocacy

Students will learn how we can advocate for food choices and changes that impact ourselves by researching a food issue and creating a social media post that creates awareness of the issue for peers.

Food Journals

Students will learn how we can make informed food choices by creating a food journal and writing an expository summary of their findings including how they could adjust their eating to include more whole foods.

Nourishing With Nutrients

Students will learn how food impacts health by researching the importance of a specific nutrient group and presenting to the class.

Food Advertisements

Students will learn how food behaviors are influenced by external and internal factors by examining food advertisements. Students will explore the idea of nutrient density and the importance of moving away from “good for you/bad for you” language when it comes to describing food. Map Your Meal

Students will learn how food and the environment are interconnected by tracing the origins of ingredients in a recipe and investigating how to eat seasonally in their hardiness zone.

Growing and Eating Food Around the World: The Story of Rice

Students will learn about food sources and origins by watching how rice is grown and cooked in different ways around the world.
